In the wake of the stalled Doha Round and proliferation of regional trade agreements, what does the future hold for the WTO? Emily Jones, GEG’s Deputy Director, joined UNCTAD’s Expert Group on the International Trading System and Inclusive Development.

Meeting for two days in Geneva, the group debated the drivers of shifts in the international trading system and the challenges and opportunities posed for developing countries. Dr. Jones addressed options for WTO reform after the 9th WTO Ministerial, recognising the need for making the WTO a more efficient place for negotiations, but cautioning that reforms should not come at the price of inclusion and sustainable development. She also presented research on the strategies and tactics developing countries can use to maximise their influence in regional trade negotiations.
