Professor Njuguna Ndung'u, the immediate former Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, will join the Blavatnik School of Government as a Visiting Fellow of Practice during the 2015–16 academic year. He will be hosted at the Global Economic Governance (GEG) Programme, where he will be distilling lessons on the regulation of mobile banking, which has proved hugely popular in Kenya since his decision to enable the country’s first mobile money transfer service whilst serving as Central Bank Governor. M-Pesa, as it is known, has become the technological platform for financial inclusion in Kenya.

During his time at GEG, Professor Ndung’u will also be advising the new ESRC/DFID research project that investigates the impact of global financial regulation on low-income countries.

Professor Ndung'u is recipient of the inaugural Yaw Adjepong Boateng Memorial Fellowship at BSG, which brings a highly experienced senior official from an African Central Bank to Oxford for three months.

In recognition of the School’s commitment to Africa, the Visiting Fellow of Practice provides an opportunity for such senior practitioners to record and share reflections and insights from their careers. The case studies and policy briefings produced during the fellowships and the workshops and forums held ensure that the knowledge and expertise of high-level practitioners is captured and shared for wider benefit.
