Dr Maria A. Gwynn is currently a Lecturer and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Public International Law at the University of Bonn. Her research focus in international law concerns the international cooperation in the uses of shared resources.

Dr Gwynn’s research interests also lie in analysing international treaties to identify different forms of sovereignty costs derived from them and how they can be diminished. She analyses legal and political factors in asymmetrical international negotiations, and is currently investigating the upcoming renegotiation of the most important hydro-electrical energy treaty (the Itaipu treaty) in the South American region as a case study, aiming to provide insights concerning sustainable development practices consistent with international law that can be of benefit for the parties and the region.

Dr Gwynn has also conducted research in the area of international investments, and compares the different strategies of states facing the challenges of investment treaties and investor-state disputes. In her contributions in international relations, she has focused on the analytical concept of structural power derived from modified structuralism and its current applications in international relations.

During her time as an Oxford-Princeton Global Leader Fellow, she was a fellow at University College, Oxford; holds an LLB (Honours) from the National University of Asuncion; postgraduate international practice diplomas in International Arbitration and Mergers and Acquisition by the College of Law of England and Wales and the International Bar Association; a Magister Juris from the University of Oxford, UK, with specialization in international dispute settlement, corporate finance, contracts and constitutional theory; and a Doctorate (Dr.Phil) from Bergische Universtität Wuppertal, Germany.
